Zhiqian Lyu

China

Born in 2009 in Shanghai, China, Zhiqian began his piano studies at the tender age of three and a half. Since 2015, he has been under the tutelage of Professor Kuanwen Wang at the Music Middle School Affiliated to Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He is currently in the ninth grade at this prestigious institution. Zhiqian exhibits a profound passion for classical music and a lasting fascination with the piano. His favorite composer is Chopin, and he has played several of Chopin's works in various genres. Over the next two semesters, he plans to study all 24 preludes and the Concerto No.1 of Chopin. Additionally, he has explored a wide repertoire including pieces from the Baroque, Classical, and Impressionist periods, as well as compositions by contemporary greats such as Wild-Gershwin, Kapustin, and Tan Dun. Since the 2022 academic year, Zhiqian has also been involved in chamber music, specifically playing in a piano trio. His performances are marked by a strong desire for expression and an ability to communicate with the composer across time and space. He has graced stages in numerous prestigious venues, including the Shanghai Music Hall, He Luting Concert Hall, the Music Hall of Xiamen International Conference Center, and the Horowitz Concert Hall of Steinway House. In addition to his performance achievements, Zhiqian has distinguished himself in numerous piano competitions. He has garnered top prizes in major competitions, such as becoming the Champion of the 2023 Fifth US Music Certification Exams Piano Open Competition Finals, and winning the Gold Prize in the 2022 3rd Warsaw International Youth Piano Competition China Finals. In 2021, he secured the Second Prize at the Shanghai International Music Festival Piano Competition. In May of this year, he was selected for the prestigious 30th International Frédéric Chopin Piano Competition for Children and Youth in Szafarnia, Poland. Furthermore, he has been a consistent recipient of the Niu Ende and RENMIN scholarships throughout his middle school years. Most notably, Zhiqian achieved a significant milestone by winning the Gold Medal in the Young Musician II category of the 2023 Nashville International Chopin Piano Competition, further cementing his status as a rising star in the world of classical piano.
